Reconstructing Hydrothermal Fluid Pathways and Storage at the Solfatara Crater (Campi Flegrei, Italy) Using Seismic Scattering and Absorption

چکیده

Imaging of fluid pathways is crucial to characterize processes taking place in hydrothermal systems, a primary cause volcanic unrest and associated hazards. The joint imaging seismic absorption scattering an efficient instrument map flow at crustal scale, specifically volcanoes; however, this technique has so far been applied image volcanoes systems the kilometre scale. Here, we use data from meter-scale, active survey inside shallow structure Solfatara crater obtain first frequency-dependent near-surface model system. used monitor historic Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy), high-risk volcano under continuous surveillance due its closeness densely populated area. Improving part system broaden understanding that are progressively characterizing other portions eastern caldera. contrasts highlight structural feature, fault separating plume zones CO 2 saturation nearing fumaroles. While high-absorption anomalies mark high soil temperatures fluxes, low-absorption indicate very upflow caused by between liquid-rich vapour-rich fluids coming mud pools fumaroles, respectively. All maps show SW-NE trend consistent with fluid-migration towards results provide constraints clarify mechanisms migration crater. techniques offer complementary geophysical images interpretation prove attenuation measurements suitable heterogeneous media detailed

Geochemistry of Melt Inclusions from the Fondo Riccio and Minopoli 1 Eruptions at Campi Flegrei (Italy)

Campi Flegrei is a large volcanic complex located west of the city of Naples, Italy. The area has been the site of volcanic activity for more than 60 ka and represents a potential volcanic hazard owing to the large local population. In this study, the geochemistry of the magma associated with two different eruptions at Campi Flegrei has been characterized, with the aim to identify geochemical t...

Progressive approach to eruption at Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy

Unrest at large calderas rarely ends in eruption, encouraging vulnerable communities to perceive emergency warnings of volcanic activity as false alarms. A classic example is the Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy, where three episodes of major uplift since 1950 have raised its central district by about 3 m without an eruption. Individual episodes have conventionally been treated as indepe...

Magma transfer at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) before the 1538 AD eruption

Calderas are collapse structures related to the emptying of magmatic reservoirs, often associated with large eruptions from long-lived magmatic systems. Understanding how magma is transferred from a magma reservoir to the surface before eruptions is a major challenge. Here we exploit the historical, archaeological and geological record of Campi Flegrei caldera to estimate the surface deformatio...

Hazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients

Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...
